Lawn care focuses on the health and treatment of your turf — fertilization, weed control, pest management, aeration, and soil amendments. Lawn service typically refers to maintenance tasks like mowing, edging, and trimming. Field of Dreams is a lawn care and pest control company. We specialize in making your lawn healthy, green, and weed-free through professional-grade treatments. We do not provide mowing or landscaping services.
National chains like TruGreen use a one-size-fits-all approach — the same program for every lawn regardless of its specific conditions. At Field of Dreams, every customer receives a customized treatment plan tailored to their soil type, grass variety, and unique challenges. We also include free service calls between scheduled treatments, offer a 10% pre-pay discount, and provide direct communication with your technician. When you call us, you talk to a real person who knows your lawn — not a call center in another state. That personal service is what Allen Oriti founded this company to provide, and it is what sets us apart nearly 30 years later.

About Our Treatments & Programs
Our signature 7-step fertilization program delivers professional-grade, timed-release granular fertilizer through seven carefully timed applications matched to Ohio's growing season. Starting with crabgrass pre-emergent in early spring and continuing through winter prep, each step is designed to feed your lawn through the root system in the soil. The program includes broadleaf weed control at every visit and is customized to your lawn's specific needs and conditions.
Early fall is the ideal time for core aeration in Northeast Ohio. Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue recover quickly in the fall growing season, and aeration combined with overseeding produces the best results when daytime temperatures are between 60 and 75 degrees. Spring aeration is also effective but should be done before crabgrass pre-emergent is applied. Ohio's heavy clay soils make annual aeration especially important for improving water absorption and root development.
Northeast Ohio is a high-risk area for grub damage due to warm, humid summers and active Japanese beetle populations from June through July. Grubs feed on grassroots below the surface, causing brown patches that peel up like carpet. Animals like raccoons and skunks dig up grub-infested lawns, compounding the damage. Preventative grub control applied in late spring or early summer is far more effective and less expensive than treating an active infestation. If you have had grub damage before, see beetles swarming in summer, or notice animal digging in your yard, preventative treatment is strongly recommended.
Our mosquito control barrier spray treatments are effective for approximately 2 to 4 weeks per application, depending on weather conditions and rainfall. For consistent protection throughout the mosquito season in Northeast Ohio (typically May through October), most homeowners benefit from treatments every 3 to 4 weeks. The treatment also reduces tick and flea populations in your yard, providing additional pest protection for your family and pets.
The most effective approach to crabgrass is prevention, not treatment after it appears. Our early spring application (step 1 of our 7-step program) includes a crabgrass pre-emergent that creates a barrier in the soil before crabgrass seeds germinate. Timing is critical — the pre-emergent must be applied before soil temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees, which typically happens in late March to mid-April in the Cleveland area. Once crabgrass is actively growing, it is much harder and more expensive to control. A thick, healthy lawn achieved through proper fertilization is also your best natural defense against crabgrass invasion.

Seasonal Questions
Timing & Ohio-Specific Lawn Care
Northeast Ohio sits on heavy clay soil that compacts easily, drains poorly, and becomes hard and cracked during dry periods. Compacted clay restricts root growth, limits water absorption, and creates an environment where weeds thrive but grass struggles. This is why core aeration is so important in our region — pulling soil plugs relieves compaction and allows water, air, and nutrients to reach the root zone. Lime applications are also critical because Ohio clay tends to be acidic, which locks up nutrients and reduces fertilizer effectiveness. A proper lawn care program designed for Ohio conditions addresses all of these challenges systematically.
In Northeast Ohio, the first lawn care application of the season typically begins in late March to early April, depending on weather conditions. This early spring treatment is critical because it includes crabgrass pre-emergent, which must be applied before soil temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees. Starting your program on time ensures your lawn is protected from annual grasses and begins greening up with the right nutrients at the right time. If you are a new customer, we recommend contacting us in February or early March to get on the schedule before the spring rush.
Snow mold is a fungal disease that develops under snow cover during Ohio winters, leaving circular gray or pink patches on your lawn when the snow melts in spring. Northeast Ohio's heavy snowfall and extended ground cover make snow mold a common problem. Our snow mold prevention treatment is applied in late fall as part of the winter prep phase, creating a protective barrier before the first significant snowfall. If you have noticed matted, discolored patches on your lawn each spring, snow mold prevention can eliminate that problem.
